AIRFLOW premieres at Interpenetration Festival Graz 13. – 15.12.2012

Sonifications of a video from a weather balloon flight – we have had this idea since long and now it is ready and we premiere the 23 pieces at the Interpenetration Festival Graz 13. – 15.12.2012 in forum stadtpark graz.

The background: we want and actually we need to test the communication module that will be installed on mursat1 to be sure that it does what we want it to do. The best way to do this is to mount it on a weatherballoon, because we can retrieve the hardware after the flight. Equipped with a special GPS-transmitter that has a broader range than normally (more than 10km), it can be found after landing back on earth. We got the video recording from July 2011 leaving Graz, from OE6XAD, Transmitter Dobl with special support by Hubert Tschugmell, OE6THH and Christian Lammer, OE6LCF.

Richie Herbst, Maru and I came up with a system: we cut the video in 23 snipets and offered them to about 30 musicians to be inspired by the imagery and sonmify them. This is the list of participants.

Satellite fishing at Videotage, cattle depot, Hong Kong

    Workshop at Videotage

Spreading out our sensors over the region, we luckily also got in touch with Videotage, Ellen Pau, Rachel Suen, Pesce Pace and again a new bunch of really interesting people.
Videotage 錄映太奇 is Asia’s Media Art Organization since 1986.

Of course, in Hong Kong it is kind of hard to fish for satellites, as there are high buildings everywhere.

But still we had quite a lot of fun, as usual!

    At dimension+ in Hong Kong

    dimension plus Hong Kong

    dimension plus Hong Kong

dimension+ is one of those spaces you want to know about when you live in Hong Kong and are interested in electronic art, building stuff yourself and having some people around who are interested in these things as well.
We definitely had a great time discussing all sorts of aspects of satellites with the people present.
Keith Lam in Hong Kong and Escher in Taipei founded dimension+ in those 2 cities and work together, among other frames also in the Playaround Series.

    Satellite Crossing Concert

    CrossingSatellite

    CrossingSatellite

It took 10min and 54sec for Yaogan 7 to cross over Taipei.

Pei-Yuen, Jogi and I played as long as it was metaphorically speaking somehow in our range.
Here you can hear, how Digeridoo, Pd and Antenna signals go together.

    Pd Satellite Orquestra Taipei

Imagine, you never used Pd before, and also didnt know anything or at least not much about satellites – then you are in the same situations as our participants in the 2012 Playaround Workshop Series, held at Taipei National University of the Arts. After an introduction from Jogi – how to interpret TLE into Pd – they worked on their sounds for a while and then we performed it together.

I had the pleasure to mix the generated sounds, and Jogi took care of the timing.

At Playaround 2012, in the TNUA Taiwan National University of the Arts

Since Tuesday, we spend most of our time on one of the terraces of the Dance Department of TNUA, in Taipeh.
Together with our participants, we have set up a nice surrounding under a huge tent. We run the “Launching a pico satellite workshop” at Playaround 2012

    preparing-for-satellitefishing1

    preparing-for-satellitefishing1

In intensive and fun discussions and debates, we talk about the space around and above us, and all sorts of information that come along with satellites, like: how can you pick up their signals? How to find them?

Our group of participants is very mixed, some have media art background, others are musicians. For all of them, it is new to hear and think about satellites.

This time, we have several days of diving into all these many topics that are related to satellites; one of them is the energy question: how much do we need to bring the satellites into orbit, how much energy does a satellite have for doing what s/he should do?

This brought some of the participants to the idea to create flying objects that can function with natural energy, like sunlight and warmth/heat, or wind. They have started building a solar balloon, and will also possibly use a kite, so they work with windpower.

And as usual, we also use the TLE->OSC-Pd patch written by Jogi to enhance the understanding about the world above us. We will have a Pd-Satellite-Orquestra at the end of Playaround, in the socalled OpenField, a series of presentations of all workshops. Our collective piece will be named PRISM, after the satellite that will pass over Taipei in the moment of our presentation.
Of course a lot of translation os going on the whole time, from technology to concept, from metophor to artistic idea, and from english to mandarin.
